George Simian: On the street with Portable Lighting Gear

Los Angeles' "Arts District", a large neighborhood of abandoned warehouses and industrial lofts, just East of Downtown, has blossomed into the visual center of the film and graphic-arts world (and is rapidly gentrifying with condos and cafes). Many of its walls are covered with highly creative murals - most put up illegally, before City Hall finally acknowledged their artistic value, and repealed the regulations that criminalized outdoor wall painting! Ian Spanier: The Two-Minute Shoot

The Two-Minute Shoot" is something I came up with on assignment for Muscle & Fitness magazine shooting with the Florida Gators football team a few years ago. The concept of the shoot was to do a day-in-the-life of the National Championship-winning team as they trained inside and outside their Gainesville, Florida facility. New ShoeMount/SpeedLight Umbrella Kit

This unique kit is designed for quick remote soft lighting by an assistant. Just add your own speedlight and your assistant can either light up the background or give you a professional looking off camera 2nd light for your portraits or group photos. It includes a LiteReach and base, so that you can use it as a back light stand or rest it on a table top when not in use. The base of the LiteReach will also mount to the top of a LiteStand for a temporary extender. It includes a multiclamp swivel to mount your speedlight along with...

Ian Spanier: Shooting Truckers from ‘Shipping Wars’

Although I often shoot in the studio, more often I am on the road. In today's world of tighter budgets and increasing airline baggage fees, traveling with heavy portable battery packs and heads is less possible. And often, when traveling to remote locations, picking up rental equipment is just not going to happen. Solutions to problems like this are the key to survival in this ever-crowded industry. So when Photoflex released the TritonFlash portable strobes, I was very intrigued. I got a chance to test them on a personal project and definitely liked them. I was eager to get...
